In 2012, Kris Ruby was honored to be chosen by Mercy College as the Keynote Speaker for “Miss Independent,” a Young Women's Conference held by Mercy College's Opportunity Programs Department hosted by C-Step, STEP and Upward Bound. The goal of the Young Women's Conference is to empower and inspire the young high school and college women. The College Opportunity Programs Department at Mercy College houses six programs funded by the New York State Department of Education and the United States Department of Education. Three of these programs host the Young Women’s Conference every other year to motivate the young women of the Collegiate Science Technology Entry Program (C-STEP), the Science Technology Entry Program (STEP) and the Upward Bound programs to empower themselves in all realms of their lives. The "Miss Independent" theme goal was chosen to motivate young women to achieve their goals on their own terms with the strength and grace of a woman. Upward Bound Coordinator Jaclyn Cooke said, “In keeping with our theme, “Miss Independent,” Kris is the ideal woman role model for these students. Reaching success at such an early age is a credit to her character and determination. Our programs aim to motivate and encourage our young women to finish high school, go to college and pursue their dreams. This is exactly what Kris did and why she is the perfect woman to speak with our girls and kick off the Young Women’s Conference right!”
